- Children with brain injuries tend to be able to acquire the same language abilities as other children but have greater difficulty developing story-telling skills, a new study shows. "Our findings suggest that there may be limitations to the remarkable flexibility for language functions displayed by children with brain injuries," study author and University of Chicago researcher Ozlem Ece Demir said in a university news release.

- Washington, July 29 ANI: In a study on mice engineered to produce a protein showed that a specific brain region, called the hypothalamus governs aging and longevity. The researchers found that mice engineered to have their brains produce more SIRT1, a protein known to play a role in aging and longevity, tend to be more active after a two-day fast than those who don't produce the protein. They explained that the mice with increased brain SIRT1 have internal mechanisms that make them use energy more efficiently, which helps them move around in search of food even after a long fast. This increased energy-efficiency could help delay aging and extend lifespan. "This result surprised us. It demonstrates that SIRT1 in the brain is tied into a mechanism that allows animals to survive when food is scarce. And this might be involved with the lifespan-increasing effect of low-calorie diets," said the study's senior author Dr. Shin-ichiro Imai, an expert in aging research at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Imai's past research demonstrated that SIRT1 is at the center of a network that connects metabolism and aging. A form of the gene is found in every organism on earth. The gene coordinates metabolic reactions throughout the body and manages the body's response to nutrition. SIRT1 is activated under low-calorie conditions, which have been shown to extend the life spans of laboratory animals. The researchers found that the key to the mice's extra activity lies in a small region of the brain called the hypothalamus, which controls basic life functions such as hunger, body temperature, stress response and sleep-wake cycles. "This is the first time that it has been demonstrated that SIRT1 is a central mediator for behaviour adaptation to low-calorie conditions," said a co-author of the study. The study suggests that the brain, and particularly the hypothalamus, might play a dominant role in governing the pace of aging. They believe their studies could eventually provide clues for increasing productive aging in people. "If we can enhance the function of the human hypothalamus by manipulating SIRT1, we could potentially overcome some health problems associated with aging. One example is anorexia of aging in which elderly people lose the drive to eat. It is possible that enhancing SIRT1 could alleviate behavioral problems like this," said Imai. The research findings are published in the latest issue of the Journal of Neuroscience. ANI

- SQL Cookbook You know the rudiments of the SQL query language, yet you feel you aren t taking full advantage of SQL s expressive power. You d like to learn how to do more work with SQL inside the database before pushing data across the network to your applications. You d like to take your SQL skills to the next level.Let s face it, SQL is a deceptively simple language to learn, and many database developers never go far beyond the simple statement: SELECT FROM WHERE . But there is so much more you can do with the language. In the SQL Cookbook, experienced SQL developer Anthony Molinaro shares his favorite SQL techniques and features. You ll learn about:Window functions, arguably the most significant enhancement to SQL in the past decade. If you re not using these, you re missing outPowerful, database-specific features such as SQL Server s PIVOT and UNPIVOT operators, Oracle s MODEL clause, and PostgreSQL s very useful GENERATE_SERIES functionPivoting rows into columns, reverse-pivoting columns into rows, using pivoting to facilitate inter-row calculations, and double-pivoting a result setBucketization, and why you should never use that term in Brooklyn. How to create histograms, summarize data into buckets, perform aggregations over a moving range of values, generate running-totals and subtotals, and other advanced, data warehousing techniquesThe technique of walking a string, which allows you to use SQL to parse through the characters, words, or delimited elements of a stringWritten in O Reilly s popular Problem/Solution/Discussion style, the SQL Cookbook is sure to please. Anthony s credo is: When it comes down to it, we all go to work, we all have bills to pay, and we all want to go home at a reasonable time and enjoy what s still available of our days. The SQL Cookbook moves quickly from problem to solution, saving you time each step of the way. User Ratings and Reviews 4 Stars An Excellent Value The price I paid Amazon is a fourth of the list price. The book was listed as slightly damaged. But the damage is very minor there is a wrinkle in the cover, and one page had a little section ripped off. I ll accept that level of damage any day. I haven t spent as much time with it as I would like to, so my review is based on just a few uses. Molinaro starts off with very basic SQL. Then the examples get more interesting. What I like about the book is that it shows how to go from a verbal description of what information you want to the actual query that makes it happen. 5 Stars Great SQL book A must have for any person who want to write advance SQL. It has examples for DB2, Sybase, MSSQL, and Oracle. 4 Stars Good stuff but kind of repetitive I work a lot crunching data, and it turns out that i got a whole lot of good tips from this book The problem is that somehow the tips got very repetitive. For beginners would be very helpful as repetitiveness might inspire different approaches, but for an advance user this variability is irritanting.. well, at least for me. - even so GOOD to have at hand. 5 Stars Other uses for this book Majority of the cookbooks cater to seasoned programmers so they can quickly lookup a solution without having to reinvent the wheel. However, this particular cookbook can also be used by less experienced programmers as part of learning by example methodology. After learning the sql basics, I had decided to purchase this text. I would read the problem statement and then try to implement the solution by myself. I would compare my solution to that of the author s. Or in certain cases, cheat by copying the given solution. It took me 3 months to try each and every problem in the text, but in the end, it definitely helped to improve my sql code reading, designing, and coding skills. I would recommend this book to anybody who is interested in mastering any flavor of sql. 4 Stars Chock-full of info, but needs an index! I m not going to summarize the text, since other reviews have done that very well. The only thing I want to contribute is that I bought the Kindle version for my iPod, and it doesn t have an index. I ve had to return to the table of contents multiple times and still needed to guess where a keyword might appear. Would you know, for example, that the minus set difference function appeared in the section titled, Retrieving values from one table that do not exist in another if you were unfamiliar with SQL There is so much information in this book that I reference constantly, and an index complete with hyperlinks to appropriate sections would have helped so much! As it is, I need the paper version of this book for my office, and the Kindle to read on the bus to work. Still, I would HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who uses SQL, no matter what platform. - Ever thought about opening the door of your car from your phone just like James Bond does Well, General Motors, Holden's parent company has now launched a new iPhone app that could replace the car key. It can already warn of parking officers, order your groceries and boost your share portfolio. General Motors is working on an app for the iPhone and rival Google phone for some of its cars sold in the United States. The phone application will allow drivers to activate all of the traditional key fob features, including unlocking the doors and opening the boot. There will also be a remote start function that could prove handy for warming up the car on those colder mornings or cooling it down during summer, and if you forget where you parked you can set off your car's horn and lights at the touch of a button so it can alert you to its location. The app, which is set to be available within a few months, will also display a vehicle 'health report', which will include info such as fuel range, oil life, tyre pressures as well as a lifetime breakdown of average fuel economy for the car. However, the app will only be available in the US, Canada and China, with buyers of Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC expected to be able to control their car from their phone within a few months. The app is run as part of an in-vehicle safety and security system called OnStar. "Technology empowers drivers to make decisions about their travels well before they enter the vehicle, meaning their full attention can stay where it needs to be - on the road ahead," the Sydney Morning Herald quoted company spokesman Chris Preuss as saying.
